Portugal -Madeira - Self-guided walking tour Picos and Levadas

Our local partner in Madeira, with 10 years of experience knows every corner of this beautiful island !

Small volcanic Island with exuberant vegetation, Madeira offers amazing and impressive landscapes to the ramblers . Mineral ridges rise up from Primary Forest, the Laurisylva, featuring on the Unesco World Heritage list, and finally end in deep lush valleys, the “Ribeiras”. A patchwork of tropical terrace cultivation stretch out to the sea, and around the hamlets. Baroque churches and Quintas hidden beneath vibrant bougainvillea are the witness of the Colonial past. The Banana trees, sugar cane, “igname” cultures are irrigated by the “levadas” or irrigation canal dug on the mountain slopes and doted with blue hydrangea and bright viper’s bugloss.
